Dying Dreams in Tajikistan’s Global Borderland

Twenty-five years since the end of Tajikistan’s civil war in 1997, dreams and aspirations international development cross-border mobility country’s Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, colloquially called “the Pamirs,” have evaporated. Once mountainous region was envisaged to a prosperous postwar future ahead it, with emerging trade links China Afghanistan, substantial funding from nongovernmental organizations, support wealthy Muslim institutions. Today, as Tajik government mounts violent campaign eradicate opposition, people Pamirs are surrounded by closed borders an ever-shrinking space which participate politics economy.
